This fire involved an auto salvage yard building and had a good start before firefighters arrived on the scene. There was a problem with dead-end hydrants in the area. A larger volume hydrant at Rice Street required relays from a long distance. Crews laid lines to protect adjacent propane tanks from becoming involved. Some water supplies were delayed while firefighters tried to find hydrants on the other side of fences that restricted access into the area. Engine 17 found a hydrant on the opposite side of a fence dividing commercial properties, cut a hole in the fence and laid a supply line into the scene. Firefighters were able to keep flames from spreading into two adjacent buildings. Crews remained on the scene until 1853 hours. Damage to the Acme Auto Supply was estimated at $500,000. |

This fire started in Boxboard Mill Station #1, where the paper for cereal boxes is made. The fire quickly spread to the ceiling and the buildings ventilation system. This allowed fire and smoke to spread to upper areas of the large commercial structure. A second alarm was called due to the large volume of fire in the building. Ladders 20 and 8 raised their towers to the roof to access roof areas. Crews worked hard to chase down fire extension and complete extinguishment. The fire was under control approximately four hours after the first alarm was sounded. Crews remained on the scene until 2054 during overhaul. Damage to the Rock-Ten plant was estimated at $500,000. |
