This fire was started by molten solder being used in the attic. When fire crews arrived, the attic was fully involved. All first alarm companies pulled lines or supplied water. Flames were coming through the roof from the front to the back of the fire building. Ladder 7 laddered the building. A second alarm was called for more firefighters because of exposure problems. The fire attack went very well and crews had the fire knocked down within 15 minutes, but required extensive overhaul. Damage was estimated at $75,000.00 and crews remained on the scene until 1430 hours. |

This fire started when one employee removing a gas tank from an auto and another employee was using an acetylene torch nearby, accidentally igniting gas fumes from the tank. Companies found heavy smoke and fire through the roof on arrival. A heavy defensive attack was initiated. First-in Engine 22 was on a medical run. Ladder 22 laid a four-inch feeder line in from Sycamore and Rice to the fire building and set up their ladder pipe in the rear. Engine 8 caught a bad hydrant near the fire building and had to lay out to Sycamore and Atwater and fed Engine 17's deck gun. Engine 4 fed Ladder 8's tower from Sycamore and Sylvan. Engine 1 laid out to the south over the Rice Street Bridge. Engine 7 continued 1's line when it ran out of hose and then relay pumped from Engine 15 at the hydrant at Rice and Pennsylvania. Engine 5 also laid off Engine 1 into Ladder 8's Tower. Engine 18's Telesqurt and Ladder 18's ladder pipe were also used on this exterior attack. Crews on the northwest corner used their heavy stream to protect an exposure. Eventually master streams were scaled back and crews advanced hand-lines to extinguish spot fires. One employee suffered minor injuries and was transported by Medic 22. Hard work by all firefighters on the scene completed a very successful operation. Crews saved the office structure with good hand-line placement. Minneapolis Engine 7 and Ladder 11 responded to St. Paul to fill in at vacated stations. Late in the fire, Minneapolis Engine 7 responded to a vacant dwelling fire at 472 N Cretin Avenue from St. Paul Station 17. |

Companies arrived to find heavy smoke from the attic and eaves of an unoccupied 12-unit apartment building under renovation. The fire was coming from the first floor boiler room and had extended in both directions, following the pipe chase to the attic. Engine 9 pulled their pre-connect and attacked the fire on the first floor. Squad 1 went to side three and worked with Engine 7 on the second and third floors. Engine 17 backed up Engine 9. A second alarm was called due to close exposures and the on-going renovation. The fire was knocked down quickly and crews had extended overhaul to check for extensions. Damage was estimated at $20,000 and until 1953 hours. |

This fire involved a three-story commercial building with mixed occupancy. The fire started on the second floor in a wood refinishing area where a tenant was using a box fan to ventilate sawdust. When a fire broke out in the box fan in the windowsill, the occupant used numerous portable extinguishers to try and extinguish the fire prior to fire department arrival. Firefighters arrived to find the entire warehouse area filled with stock and business supplies, making access to the fire area extremely difficult. Engine 7 and Squad 1 reported they were advancing lines to the second floor (via an outside staircase). Engine 4 reported they were pulling a preconnect on side one and had a hydrant. Engine 17 reported they had a 2-1/2 and bundle to side 4. Ladder 7 was ordered to raise their aerial to the roof, but encountered
problems with power lines. Ladder 22 (RIT) reported to side 1 and raised its aerial. Crews tried mounting an interior attack, but encountered heavy smoke and were unable to find the seat of the fire. Chief 3 called for a second alarm. Companies continued to search for the main body of fire and encountered lots of heat. All companies were evacuated when the area became unstable at 0937 hours. An immediate P.A.R. check was taken. Firefighters then went to an exterior attack (defensive mode). Ladder 8 set up its tower on side 3. Engine 17 used its deck gun from the southeast corner parking lot. Ladder 10 set up its aerial over buildings on Payne Avenue and used its ladder pipe. Ladder 22 set up its aerial tower on side 1. Multiversals were set up of all sides of the fire building. The fire eventually burned through the second and third floors and then through the roof of the building. The fire went to a third alarm at 1013 hours with special calls for additional apparatus. Minneapolis Engine 19 responded to the fire and pumped for hours supplying St. Paul crews. The Ramsey County Emergency Management team provided service from the State Patrol Helicopter using thermal imaging capability for proper placement of elevated streams. Operation was terminated at 2200 hours with full expectation for firefighters to return to extinguish hot spots in the collapsed debris. Damage was estimated at $3,500,000.00. The last companies cleared the scene at 2250 hours.
During this fire, St. Paul had a second working fire on West 7th Place, in the downtown area. At 1102 hours St. Paul dispatched Engines 13-6-24, Ladder 18, and Chief 1 to #7 West 7th Place for a reported fire on the second floor. Dispatchers reported they had numerous calls. Engine 6 reported on the scene with many residents outside the building and that they were investigating. Dispatchers notified them that the fire was reported in Apartment 234. When
Engine 6 got up to the second floor, they reported heavy smoke conditions. Engine 6 hooked into the standpipe and Engine 24 laid into the standpipe system. Chief 1 special called for an additional truck and Minneapolis Ladder 3 was dispatched. Engine 6 reported that they had an unconscious victim in unit 234 at 1110 hours and that they were bringing him out. Chief 1 called for a medic unit and Hennepin County Medic 411 was dispatched. Engine 6 reported that the fire was knocked down and other companies reported that the third and fourth floors were clear. The victim of this fire was DOA at Regions Hospital. |

This fire was in the lower level of the Children's Museum, a multi-story complex built alongside a steep cliff in downtown St. Paul. The fire started in a microwave oven that was being used to melt down crayons for children's art projects. The teacher noticed smoke and called the building engineer who notified the fire department. The buildings alarm system was soon activated from the smoke conditions and the building was evacuated. The I/C directed some arriving crews to enter at the lower level in the rear of the building. The fire consumed the microwave and other combustibles nearby on a lower level. Once St. Paul firefighters were able to remove the smoke on the lower level, building occupants were allowed to return to the museum. Damage was estimated at $1,000.00 and crews were clear of the scene by 1600 hours. |

This fire started in large storage shed on the rear deck of a house. The fire quickly extended into the house on a very windy day. With the volume of fire and the gusty winds, the fire soon spread to an adjacent house to the south. Crews encountered heavy fire conditions on arrival at the rear of the house. First-in Engine 10 parked in front and pulled two preconnects. Squad 2, also in front, pulled a preconnect line. Engine 1 entered the alley and pulled a preconnect to the rear of the house. Ladder 10 and Engine 5 also pulled into the alley, facing Engine 1. Ladder 10 pulled two preconnects. Engine 5 laid a supply line and fed Ladder 10 with a 2-1/2" supply. Ladder 10 fed Engine 1 with a 4-inch line. A supply 4-inch supply line was pulled off Engine 10 and stretched to a hydrant. Lines were laid to main fire at the rear of the house and also to second floor of the adjacent home at 398 Clifton. Water supplies were established and a second alarm was called for additional crews. Truck crews worked on the roof of the fire building using safe roof operations. The extension to a third home at 402 Clifton was confined to the siding and eaves. Four adults and three children were displaced by this fire. Damage to 394 Clifton was estimated at $100,000.00, damage to 398 Clifton was estimated at $40,000.00, and damage to 402 Clifton was estimated at $10,000.00. Crews
