This fire started in a second floor apartment and spread into a third floor unit. Access to the building was very difficult as the building sits within a complex. Getting a good look at the building was difficult because of tree cover and the outer buildings location. The fire was venting from the patio door on a second floor deck to the third floor unit as companies arrived. Residents reported that everyone was out as fire companies arrived. Engines 24, 7 4 and Squad 1 made the initial attack of the fire. Two 2-1/2 inch lines were stretched to the building. Second and third alarms were called due to the number of three-personnel companies. Two firefighters were also injured. Medic 9 treated one juvenile occupant at the scene and transported a firefighter to Regions Hospital. Power, gas and water were all shut off to the fire building. Approximately 15 residents were displaced. The on-coming shift relieved two crews on the scene. Damage to the building was estimated at $400,000.00. |

Fire was reported in the oxidation heating unit of the Gopher State Ethanol Plant. Insulation around the unit broke down and the 1500 degree Fahrenheit unit radiated heat which caught the insulation on fire. The fire then spread to the roof, which melted, and ignited the insulation foam. Vapors from melting and burning insulation under ignited under the roof area and flashed off. Holes were cut in the roof to halt fire spread as hose lines were used to cool the roof area. The cooling on the underside of the roof stopped the fire spread through the insulation. One firefighter was injured and transported by Medic 19 to Regions Hospital. Damage was estimated at $10,000.00. Companies worked at the scene until 2233 hours. |
