Companies found smoke coming from the roof of this large locomotive repair facility owned by the Minnesota Commercial Railway Company. Damage was mostly confined to a vent fan and the roof of the structure. Damage was estimated at $10,000. Companies were on the scene until 1550 hours overhauling.

First-due companies found flames from showing on the western side of the second floor of a large 40X120’ two and a half story building housing the Rice Street Gym and apartments. A second alarm was requested on arrival. Engines 18, 8, and Squad 2 laid pre-connect lines. Ladder 22 set up its aerial and Engine 1 supplied water. Fire had extended through the walls into the attic area on the western side of the building

A passerby reported seeing smoke from the roof of a two-story abandoned building. On arrival, Engine 24 and Squad 1 pulled handlines. Ladder 7 raised its aerial to the roof. Engines 7 and 4 were water supply companies. Ladders 7, Ladder 24 and Squad 1 provided ventilation . Engine 8 was RIT company. Ladder 7 and Squad 1 also performed primary and secondary searches. The Deputy Chief was incident commander, Chief 3 was operations chief and Chief 2 was staging chief. The police detained four juveniles who possibly set a mattress on fire with the fire spreading to other debris. Damage was estimated at $2,500.00 and companies cleared the scene at 2023 hours

Black smoke and flames greeted first alarm companies arriving at this district energy plant. Operations on this fire were divided into roof sector command and rear sector command. A standpipe in the rear of the building was charged from a hydrant across the railroad tracks. Trains had to be stopped during operations. One hose streams were in place, the fire was knocked down fairly quickly. Damage to the energy plant was estimated at $250,000. The last company left the scene at 1600 hours

First alarm companies responded to a report of a smoke smell on the third floor. Arriving crews spotted smoke and fire coming from the southwest corner of the roof. The roof was laddered and lines were laid to the third floor. Companies evacuated the third floor and forced entry into a vacant apartment to find fire above a light fixture in the ceiling of the kitchen. The fire was extinguished in a few minutes. Third floor residents were then allowed to return to their apartments. Damage to the apartment building was estimated at $25,000.00.

This fire started in a second floor apartment and spread into a third floor unit. Access to the building was very difficult as the building sits within a complex. Getting a good look at the building was difficult because of tree cover and the outer buildings location. The fire was venting from the patio door on a second floor deck to the third floor unit as companies arrived. Residents reported that everyone was out as fire companies arrived. Engines 24, 7 4 and Squad 1 made the initial attack of the fire. Two 2-1/2 inch lines were stretched to the building. Second and third alarms were called due to the number of three-personnel companies. Two firefighters were also injured. Medic 9 treated one juvenile occupant at the scene and transported a firefighter to Regions Hospital. Power, gas and water were all shut off to the fire building. Approximately 15 residents were displaced. The on-coming shift relieved two crews on the scene. Damage to the building was estimated at $400,000.00.

Fire companies arrived to flames coming from second floor windows of a three-story multiple family dwelling. Crews found the second and third floors very smoky. A second alarm was called for additional manpower. Crews forced some apartment doors open to do primary searches. The fire was confined to one second floor unit with probable start in or around a mattress. The fire was quickly controlled. Ventilation was performed, assisted by second alarm companies. One resident was triaged at the scene and released. Damage to the apartment complex was estimated at $20,000.00. The last crew left the scene at 0526 hours.

This fire involved unit 206 of a three-story apartment building. The fire was contained to a bedroom, but smoke damaged hallways on the second and third floors. The alarm system did not sound from either smoke detectors or pulled alarms in the building. No injuries were reported and there was little water damage. Damage was estimated at $50,000.00.

This fire caused an estimated $150,000.00 damage to a large commercial structure. Crews used forced entry into several areas of the building to further extinguishments and to ventilate. A second alarm was called for additional crews to assist in searching the large structure. Crews were at the scene working until 0945 hours

This fire involved the A.W. Sandblasting Company, a one-story commercial building. Firefighters found fire in the southeast corner of the building. A second alarm was called, but firefighters quickly knocked down the fire before second alarm units arrived on the scene. Damage to the building was estimated as $50,000.00. Crews remained on the scene until 0300 hours.

Fire was reported in the oxidation heating unit of the Gopher State Ethanol Plant. Insulation around the unit broke down and the 1500 degree Fahrenheit unit radiated heat which caught the insulation on fire. The fire then spread to the roof, which melted, and ignited the insulation foam. Vapors from melting and burning insulation under ignited under the roof area and flashed off. Holes were cut in the roof to halt fire spread as hose lines were used to cool the roof area. The cooling on the underside of the roof stopped the fire spread through the insulation. One firefighter was injured and transported by Medic 19 to Regions Hospital. Damage was estimated at $10,000.00. Companies worked at the scene until 2233 hours.

This fire involved a kitchen on the first floor of a large three-story apartment complex. Engine 24 arrived a pulled a pre-connect to the unit involved. Squad 1 assisted and checked for extension. Ladder 24 evacuated residents with the assistance of Engine 9 and then assisted with ventilation. Engine 7 laid a 4-inch supply line and assisted in evacuating residents. Engine 8 placed ground ladders and checked upper floors for extension. Ladder 7 special called for roof operations and to ventilate. A second alarm was called for additional manpower due to weather. The fire was knocked down and Red Cross was called for one displaced occupant. Medic 4 evaluated one resident, but didn't transport. Damage was estimated at $30,000.00.

This fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in the attic. The fire was contained to the attic ceiling and roof area. There were no injuries. Seven building residents were displaced. Damage was estimated at $100,000.00. Crews were on the scene until 0117 hours.

This 2-1/2-story unoccupied dwelling was heavily involved in fire on arrival of fire crews. Engines 7, Squad 1 and Engine 8 pulled hand-lines. Engine 4 was water supply. Squad 1 conducted primary search and rescue and advanced line. Second and third alarms called for additional manpower. Numerous hand-lines were stretched and supplied with water supplies were used. This fire called for extensive use of ground ladders in extinguishment. The Salvation Army responded to assist with rehab. A housing inspector was called to the scene and determined that the building was unstable. Engine 5 assisted during demolition operations. This fire appeared to be incendiary in nature and the building was a total loss with damage estimated at $150,000.00.

Companies arrived to find heavy smoke and fire from a large two- and a half-story duplex. Companies did an initial search and found no occupants. Most of the fire was on the second floor and had extended into the high-peaked attic area. A second alarm was called for additional manpower to fight the stubborn fire in the attic area. Companies found ventilation difficult because of three layers of roofing, the last layer being cedar shingles. Damage to the structure was estimated at $200,000.00. Companies were on the scene until 0150 hours.
