Companies responded to a report of a fire in a room at a 150' x 60', 8-story, nursing home. Engine 19 arrived and was met by a maintenance person who stated there was a fire in a room on the 7th floor. Engine 19 requested a second alarm, proceeded by elevator to the 6th floor, and walked to the 7th floor. Nursing staff had evacuated residents of the 7th floor west wing to a safe lounge area. Upon investigation Engine 19 found the sprinkler activated in room 708. Ladder 3 came up, conducted a primary search of the 7th floor finding one resident in a room, and assisted him to a safe area. Fire was extinguished by the sprinkler and was contained to the room of origin. Resident of that room was new to the facility that day and was transported to hospital for smoke inhalation. No lines were laid. Ladder 3 silenced the alarm, shut down the sprinkler system, and ventilated the area. Rescue 9 and nursing home staff evacuated the water. Last company left the fire ground at 1650. |

First alarm assignment was dispatched to the report of a structure fire. First arriving Engine 17 reported heavy fire showing from the rear of a two and one-half story wood frame structure. Engine 17 laid a line and made an exterior attack on the vinyl siding that was burning from the first floor to the attic. Ladder 5 arrived, conducted a primary search of the first and second floors, and then assisted Engine 5 with an interior attack line to heavy fire involvement in the walk-up attic. Engine 8 arrived and laid its own supply line and back up line into 2931 Clinton. Battalion 2 arrived, assumed command, and reported the exposure structure at 2933 Clinton, a two-story wood frame four-plex, on fire and requested a second alarm. The Deputy arrived and assumed command and assigned companies to assist in the interior fire attacks at 2931 and 2933 Clinton with Battalion 2 assigned to 2931 Clinton and Battalion 1 assigned to 2933 Clinton. Crews at 2931 Clinton reported heavy fire throughout the attic and were exiting the structure to change air bottles. Fire burned through the roof and conditions were changing rapidly. Fire attack was changed from offensive to defensive mode at 2931 Clinton. A third alarm was requested and a water tower was set up on 2931 Clinton for exterior operations. Rescue 1 conducted a primary search of the first and second floors of 2933 Clinton while laying a line to the second floor interior. The entire roof of 2933 Clinton was eventually involved in fire. Crews were removed from 2933 Clinton and the fire attack went from offensive to defensive mode. Fire was bought under control in approximately two hours. Two firefighters received second-degree steam burns, one to the left hand and the other to an ear, while fighting the fire in the attic at 2931 Clinton. Their turnout gear was wet from a previous fire earlier in the evening. Both structures were vacant and boarded up at the time of the fire and were apparently under renovation. Two engine companies from St. Paul were called to fill in at Station 6 and 8. Last company left the fire ground at 0638. |

First alarm assignment responded to a reported structure fire at 600 West 32nd Street. Upon arriving, Engine 8 reported smoke coming from the attic area and laid a tank line to the third floor for an interior attack. Engine 22 assisted Engine 8 with a supply line, a back up line, and secured a separate supply line for Engine 22. Engine 17 assumed RIT. Ladder 5 placed their aerial to the roof on the 32nd Street side for ventilation operations and also conducted rescue of an occupant from the second floor. Rescue 1 assisted in searching for a second means of access to the third floor area, and assisted in moving hand lines. Ventilation operations on the roof were stopped due to heavy fire involvement of the attic area with fire showing through several areas of the roof. A second alarm was requested with staging at 32nd and Lyndale Avenue South. Fire attack was changed from an offensive interior to a defensive exterior attack. There were two exposure structures however neither were a factor. Two master stream appliances and several hand lines were deployed to knock down the fire. Once knocked down, operations were changed back to an offensive interior attack and crews were rotated through rehab. Once fire was extinguished, residents were accompanied back into the structure to secure personal items. One firefighter was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, treated for dehydration, and released. Engine 22 was towed to the shop due to a malfunction that caused it to overheat. Last company left the fire ground at 1415. |

A first alarm assignment was dispatched to a residential house fire. Upon arrival Engine 14 reported heavy smoke showing from the rear of the building and upon investigating found they had fire on the exterior rear of the building that appeared to have extended to the interior of the first and second floors and proceeded to lay a line for an offensive interior attack on the first floor. Ladder 10 initiated a primary search of the first floor. Engine 2 arrived and indicated they were laying a supply line to Engine 14 and a back up line. Engine 4 arrived, reported they a second separate garage fire in the rear of the fire building, and laid a tank line for knock down. A second alarm was requested with staging at 30th and Bryant Avenues North. Rescue 9 arrived and assisted with primary search of the basement, second floor, and also shut off the gas line. Engine 14 reported they had the fire knocked down on the first floor and took their line to the second floor to assist Ladder 10. Ladder 10 reported they had knocked down the fire on the second floor with a pump can and were checking for extension. Engine 16 arrived and was assigned as RIT. Engine 2 reported they had a bad hydrant and went to the next hydrant but ran short of 5-inch hose to make the hydrant at the next corner. Engine 16 secured a water source and was used to supply Engine 14. Engine 4 reported they had the fire out on the garage behind the house. Secondary searches were completed; Red Cross was requested to assist the occupants of the home. This was an arson fire using a gasoline and oil mixture. Last company left the fire ground at 0435. |

First alarm assignment was dispatched to a two-story wood frame structure with brick and stucco fascia. First floor was commercial and second floor consisted of two residential units. Smoke was reported coming from a light fixture located in the interior wall of a second floor bathroom. Crews located smoke conditions in the basement, first, and second floors. Ladder 11 began to open up walls and ceiling to look for source of fire. Engine 8 laid a tank line. Engine 22 laid a supply line and a back up line. Rescue 1 crew split; Rescue 1 A & C conducted primary searches while Rescue 1 B went to the roof for ventilation. Engine 6 was assigned RIT. Smoke conditions began to worsen, the seat of the fire had not been located, and a second alarm was requested. Fire was in the plenum space between the flat roof and ceiling of the second floor apartment units, as well as in an interior balloon frame wall. Incoming crews were assigned to assist in opening up three different ceilings on the second floor to gain access to the fire. A third alarm was requested for additional resources. Crews checked for extension into exposure building at 2710 Lyndale. Fire was brought under control at 1540 and crews remained on the scene conducting overhaul operations. This was an accidental fire caused by an electrical short. Last company left the fire ground at 2041. |

A first alarm assignment was dispatched to the University of Minnesota steam generating plant on the report of a fire on the roof. First arriving companies reported steam coming from the roof and on further investigation found fire on the roof in the roofing material. Engine 11 laid the first attack line and charged the standpipes. Engine 19 laid a back up line. Rescue 9 and Ladder 3 gained access and located the fire. Crews reported there was fire drop down from the roof area around a vent pipe. They went to the roof where fire was showing from the hatch area and was blowing out of some piping. The hatch opening was acting as a wind tunnel. A second alarm was struck. Access to the roof is limited to a single hatchway limiting ability to advance hose lines and personnel. Initial knockdown was achieved and crews were able to advance onto the roof. Once on the roof firefighting efforts were hampered by a heavy steam discharge which made visibility very difficult. This was a flat built up roof and initial strategy was to cut into the roofing material, peel it way, and extinguish the fire. U of M plant personnel feared that water running into the building would damage the plants control system forcing shut down of power generation that in turn would shut down power to the University of Minnesota Hospital. Attack strategy was changed to using dry chemical extinguishers instead of water on the fire as roofing material was excavated. A third alarm was struck for additional personnel to assist with extensive overhaul. Last company left the fire ground at 0127 on November 10. |
