An initial assignment was sent to an eight-story residential high rise on the report of smoke in the hallways. Engine 8 and Ladder 11 arrived and were met by residents reporting smoke in the 5th floor hallway. Upon investigating, Engine 8 and Ladder 11 found very light smoke on the fifth floor and located the apartment from which the smoke was issuing and began to force entry. Engine 8 requested a full assignment. Battalion 2 arrived, assumed command, and requested a second alarm. Once inside, Engine 8 found heavy smoke and Ladder 11 found an elderly male victim in the bedroom. The victim was removed to the fourth floor where Engine 17 brought medical equipment and assisted HCMC paramedics with treatment. The victim suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. Engine 8 laid from the standpipe and quickly extinguished the fire and found no further extension. Engine 6 laid a supply line and Engine 5 assumed RIT. A primary and secondary search of the fire floor found no other victims. Rescue 1 searched the sixth floor and then went to the top floor and found no smoke or extension. Apartment was heavily damaged by heat and smoke. The smoke had banked down to within three feet of the floor, and plastic overhead lights in the kitchen had melted from the heat. The last company left the fire ground at 2323. |

Engine and Ladder 4 arrived, reported a fire in an apartment on the 8th floor of a 15-story high-rise apartment building, and initiated an offensive attack with Engine 1 as backup. Engine 4 hooked into the standpipe but did not charge the line because of a quick knockdown. Rescue 1 performed search and rescue and Engine 11 assumed RIT. Occupant, a 59-year-old male, suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment. A second alarm was called but then cancelled due to the quick knockdown. Fire was confined to the room of origin. Last company left the fire ground at 2135. |

Fire began as the result of two Molotov cocktails being thrown at the home, one through a front window, and one through a bedroom window in the rear. The occupants of the home had been in the basement watching television and managed to escape unharmed. Engine 20 arrived and reported smoke showing from a one-story single family dwelling, assumed command, and initiated a rapid offensive interior attack with a tank line through a side door. Engine 14 arrived and laid a supply line and a back up line but had trouble hooking to a hydrant at 43rd and Knox. Ladder 10 started a primary search on the first floor. The supply line was delayed and Engine 20 ran out of water and crews had to evacuate the building. Engine 4 had arrived and assumed RIT but was relocated to the rear of the building in the alley and used their tank line for an exterior attack. Battalion 4 called for a second alarm and attack mode changed from offensive to defensive. The house next-door became an exposure problem and was evacuated. Engine 2 arrived and laid a supply line to Engine 4 but the lay was cancelled when Engine 14 was able to get water to Engine 20 and the transition from exterior to interior attack began again. Ladder 10 assumed RIT while Engine 20 and Engine 14 reentered the building and quickly knocked down the fire. Fire was placed under control and Rescue 9 completed a primary search of the home and basement with Ladder 10 performing a secondary search. The fire had spread throughout the main floor with some extension into the cockloft. One firefighter sustained minor injury and was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment and later returned to duty. Arson investigators were notified and police secured the building. Last company left the fire ground at 0224 on March 23rd. |

Arriving companies found a large amount of fire showing from the first floor front with extension to the second floor and to a two-story house to the west. Crews did a primary search but were then driven out due to rapid spread of the fire. Attack was switched to a defensive mode and protection of the exposure building. Getting a water tower or Squrt in position to knock down fire was a problem due to electrical lines on two sides of the building. After the bulk of the fire was knocked down from the outside, crews went in with hand lines and extinguished the fire. One occupant was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center suffering from smoke inhalation and one firefighter was treated on scene for an eye injury. The last company left the fire ground at 0302. |

Arriving companies found heavy fire showing from the rear on the first and second floors with some extension to the house on the east side. Crews made an offensive interior attack. Exposure house was checked and some fire was found in the eaves and wall. Primary and secondary searches of both structures were completed. Second floor occupant reported hearing two large "pops" in the porch area, got up and discovered the porch on fire, went downstairs and alerted the first floor occupants and all exited the building. Three other fires in the general vicinity during the night had witnesses reporting hearing a popping noise before seeing a tremendous amount of fire. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries. The last company left the fire ground at 0923. |

An initial assignment was sent to check a report of smoke from a building. On arrival Engine 8 reported fire showing from the roof and second floor of a 3-story commercial building, assumed command, called for the full box assignment, and laid a tank line to the third floor for an interior attack. Engine 6 laid a supply line to Engine 8 and also a back up line. Engine 5 assumed RIT. Rescue 1 did a primary search and Ladder 5 ventilated. Interior attack knocked down fire on the second floor but the cockloft was fully involved. Battalion 2 requested a second alarm. Crews working inside reported some ceiling collapse was starting to occur. The Deputy ordered the building evacuated and operations were changed to a defensive mode. Master streams were set up using Ladder 11, Engine 5 Squrt, and Ladder 5, and three hand lines operated from the ground. The cockloft fire was controlled and crews began to overhaul the building from the outside using ground ladders and Ladder 11's bucket. A witness saw smoke coming from the building, ran across the street, and pounded on the doors telling occupants the building was on fire. About 15 people came up out of the basement level and escaped unharmed. The last company left the fire ground at 0425. |

Companies responded to a fire alarm at Smith Hall, a large four-story science building on the University of Minnesota Campus. First arriving company officer reported nothing visible to the exterior on arrival. The annunciator panel indicated smoke on the 4th floor and upon investigating fire was found in Room 413, a 30'x30' organic chemistry laboratory. A second alarm was requested as crews forced entry, hooked up a hand line to the standpipe in the stairwell, and began an interior attack. A back up line was connected to the same standpipe and a second engine company attacked the fire from the same entry point. Rescue and truck companies conducted a primary search and ventilation of the fire room and then the fourth floor. The fire was placed under control and salvage and overhaul operations conducted. Haz-Mat crew monitored the area for hazardous conditions and a secondary search of the fourth floor was completed. All crews went through decontamination upon departing the building. One firefighter suffered minor injury. The last company left the fire ground at 0632 and the building was turned over to U of M Police to secure for further investigation |

Occupant of first floor unit reported she heard male voices screaming, and then a crash, and saw fire in her kitchen and that something had been thrown through a window. She tried to extinguish the fire with a pan of water but that seemed to spread the fire. She exited the building and a passerby reported they had seen suspects get into a car and speed away. On arrival Engine 20 confirmed fire in the dwelling and laid a tank line to the first floor. Engine 14 laid a supply line and a backup line to the second floor. Ladder 10 ventilated and started a primary search along with Rescue 9, and Engine 4 assumed RIT. A 2-2 alarm was called for a second ladder company to open the roof as overhead wires blocked Ladder 10. On arrival Engine 2 assumed RIT and Engine 4 went to the interior while Engine 16 remained in staging and was later released. Second floor occupants escaped unharmed but three firefighters suffered injuries. Last company left the fire ground on June 9 at 0135 |

This was the second major arson fire in this vacant duplex in the past month. Engine 14 arrived and found fire blowing out the windows on the third floor and after forcing entry into the structure laid a tank line to the third floor. Ladder 10, assisted by Rescue 9, conducted a primary search and then raised the aerial to the roof. Engine 4 laid a supply line and backup line while Engine 2 assumed RIT. Engine 14 called for 2-2 alarm. Crews reported a strong odor of gasoline as they were laying lines up the interior stairway. The fire extended into the cockloft and eaves but was stopped before it could spread. The building was condemned and supposed to be vacant, but there was evidence someone had been living there as an electrical wire was found running from a circuit panel up through the first floor. The power company was called to shut off power to the building. Last company left the fire ground at 0526. |
